SHRUBBY PENSTEMON

Penstemon fruticosus

Figwort Family (Scrophulariaceae)

Unlike most Intermountain penstemons, this species is a true evergreen shrub. It has a compact form and beautiful, shiny green leaves, giving it structure and interest year-round. But the plant comes into its glory in late spring, when it is literally covered with masses of large, lavender blossoms. Shrubby penstemon is a mountain plant native to the northwestern part of our region, but it grows on steep, sunny roadcuts and is broadly adapted in a garden setting. It can handle both heavy snow cover and open conditions in winter and is fully cold-hardy. It is also quite drought-tolerant, requiring only occasional watering in summer when planted in drier zones. Shrubby penstemon combines well with the lower-growing blue penstemons like leo penstemon and flaxleaf penstemon. It can be used effectively as a low hedge or border planting, as it is especially beautiful in mass plantings.
